Belote through the decades: the technological evolution of a timeless game

Since 1983, belote has evolved thanks to Thierry d'Herbigny, a pioneer in its digital development. It all began with a belote software program on a local network, followed in 1987 by its online launch via the Minitel. In 2007, the game became accessible on smartphones, and in 2011, the "Playmate" further modernized the experience by using smartphones and Wi-Fi. In 2013, artificial intelligence coupled with big data revolutionized the game: robots relied on human decisions to offer a more realistic experience. Belote thus continues to blend tradition and innovation to captivate players.

Les bases de la belote

Belote pits two teams of two players against each other. Each player is dealt 8 cards, and the objective is to fulfill a contract defined during the auction, starting at 82 points. In trumps, the cards have specific values (e.g., Jack = 20 points). Players must follow the suit called or ruff if necessary. Bonuses, such as "ten of last" or "belote-rebelote," add points. The declaring team wins the round if they fulfill their contract; otherwise, they fall.

The software guides players, making it easier to learn the subtleties of the game during their first tournaments.

Tips to improve your belote game

Signaling is a playing technique interpreted by the software. To evaluate your play, count the probable tricks in trump and suit, taking into account long tricks. This evaluation becomes automatic with experience.

In strategy, count the cards and points already won. A stalemate on the 10 allows you to win a trick, but can be risky. During bidding, an even or odd opening indicates the presence or absence of the jack and nine of trump. Bid only with these specific cards and prefer no-trump bids if you have the 9-second.

When discarding, an Ace suggests a 10 behind, and a discarded 10 indicates that it is short. In Belote, with a short King-Queen, partner plays the King first to signal that they still have trumps.
